Picture this. Youve been sitting in a restaurant for 10 minutes. You peer at your watchyup, your lunch companion is late. By five minutes because you were 5 minutes early. You glance at the two menus that the waitperson placed efficiently on the table and sip at your ice water. You dont worry too much because he/she is usually late. 15 minutes. You read the menu again and try to radiate confidence when the waitperson checks on you. You said youd wait until your other party arrived to order but now youre starting to get really hungry. 20 minutes. Youve reviewed the menu so many times that you almost feel you could recite it from memory. You almost want to order an appetizer but considering the portion sizes, you know that youd never finish your entre. 25 minutes. Now, you are worrying. Maybe they got into an accident or had a flat tire. Did you get the day/time wrong? You check your cell phone but no one has called. You check your other voice mails just in case but to no avail. 30 minutes. Youre starting to simmer. Where are they? At 25 minutes late, theyd better have a really good excuse. And they better not cancel again. Not after last time. They promised that this time would be different. Suddenly, your cell phone is ringing and it is your friend, apologizing profusely, making excuses and full of future promises. Bottom linethey arent coming. They have bailed on you once again.

Has this ever happened to you? Perhaps it took a different form. A promise to help out with something, such as moving, running a bake sale or cleaning out a garage followed by a last-minute withdrawal? Or maybe it was an invitation to play tennis, go to the movies or go shopping which never actually transpired? Most of us have encountered this and many times, the reasons why things dont end up happening turn out to be fairly innocuous, everyday things. But if any of these has happened to you repeatedly with the same person at the heart of the matter, then you may be in the hands of that master or mistress of manipulation: the bailer.

Bailers vary across the board with lots of different reasons driving their behavior but the important part for you to focus on in dealing with one is this: they dont respect you or your time. If that statement puts you on the defensive, Im not surprised. Many of us make excuses for bailers because they employ such beguiling tools and tactics. We are drawn in by their charm, their sense of self-deprecation, their business and so on. They are playing on our low self-esteem and our low self-worth. After all, what does it say about how little you think of yourself, if their excuse always seem better than you? Why are you not worth the time and effort?

Once you realize and accept that you are important and worthy and fabulous and all of those things, its so much easier to see the bailer for what he/she isan energy drainer who is taking up your time, effort and emotions. It also becomes much easier to set boundaries regarding your terms for acceptable behavior. For example, it might look like this: The next time we are scheduled to have lunch, I wont wait more than 10 minutes for you. Period. If you dont show or make excuses, I wont be inviting you again. If you invite me and I accept and you still dont show, I wont be going out anywhere with you ever again.

If after all that, you still hold onto a bailer, then understand that you are choosing to tolerate their behavior. No complaints about being stood up since you put yourself in that position. No temper tantrums when they pull out of a commitment at the last minute. Its their nature and you accepted them. Personally, Id rather spend my time with people who value and respect me and my time and who stand by their commitments. For me, life is too full and I no longer have any patience with bailers.

Cow Brings Better Life To Orphans in Uganda

Geofrey Okello of Uganda was just 14 in 1998 when AIDS turned his life upside down. That was when his father died, leaving Geofrey, his mother and five siblings to fend for themselves.

His mother did the best she could but she too was sick. When she died in 2002, Geofrey, then 18, found himself to be the sole provider for his family. He had to quit college and return home to care for his brothers and sisters in the village of Jinja Wailaka.

The family often went to bed hungry as Geofrey scratched out a meager living selling corn and charcoal at the side of the road. Then a neighbor invited him to a meeting to hear about how Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that provides livestock and agricultural training, helps people become self-reliant.

Geofrey seized the opportunity and worked hard to learn how to care for the dairy cow that Heifer promised to deliver when he had completed his training. He built a cowshed, fenced in the yard to create a garden and planted native trees and grasses that were not only good for the environment but would provide fodder for the cow.

Last year, Geofrey received a cow, which he named Margaret, after his mother.

“My mother provided us life and did all she could for a better future. Now my cow provides this gift of life for us,” he said.

His small yard has changed from hard-packed red clay to fertile plots of organic squash, greens, beans, papayas, bananas and other fruits, which he learned to grow through Heifer International training. He prides himself on his immaculately clean cowshed and the four gallons of rich milk that Margaret can produce in a day.

He pays his siblings’ school tuition with income he earns from selling milk and now believes someday he too will reach his dream of getting a diploma.

How To Prevent Workplace Industries

As a former safety manager in petrochemical plants I am a strong believer that ALL injuries can be avoided with proper planning, tools, and safety equipment.

I didnt always think this way. When I began as a young carpenter building scaffolding up to as high as 600 feet, I thought sometimes accidents were just inevitable. As I gained more experience and saw accidents firsthand however, I changed my position. ALL accidents are preventable.

Most accidents occur from three reasons. The worker hasnt take the time to assess the situation and decide on the best course of action to complete the task at hand or the worker is rushing to try to beat some kind of deadline or get a task finished before quitting time. The third is not having the proper equipment or tools to complete the job safely.

Lets analyze these individually. When I worked in the petrochemical plant, workers usually worked in teams of at least two or three people. What we advised an instructed was for them to openly discuss the job at hand, the different methods to get the job done and the items needed to do the job safely. Nothing was done until they had agreed upon all of this and had acquired everything that was needed to accomplish the job in a safe manner. We had several thousand employees and went two years without a lost work day accident in an environment that is highly susceptible to accidents.

There is never a reason to rush a job at the expense of safety. Rushing inhibits proper planning and clear thinking and invariably will result in an accident, poor workmanship, or both. It doesnt make sense to rush when you know that the odds are if you get through it without injury you will have to do it over or even worse, you may not survive it.

There is never a reason not to have the proper tools and equipment to do a job. The rule is quite simple, if you do not have the tools and equipment to do the job safely dont begin the job. This is one of the big contributors I have seen to injuries in the workplace and it is usually in combination with rushing.

These are the basic suggestions I will make to you if you want to return home with everything you came to work with.

Wear appropriate gloves to protect your hands from cuts, burns, and abrasions.
Wear safety glasses to prevent foreign objects from getting in your eyes.
Wear ear plugs to keep noise levels from permanently damaging your hearing.
If you are involved in work that involves heavy lifting, wear a back support.

Filters For Landscape Photography.

Filters are used in photography to bring back an image to the way our eyes have perceived the original scene. Some times its not possible for our cameras to record an exact scene – so we have to rely on the manufacturers of camera products.

Filters also help us to create mood in our images and bring out the best in a scene. A small selection of filters is well worth packing when heading off for a trip. They dont take up too much space and will definitely add a bit of spice to your images.

Filters work by being placed in front of your camera lens. You can also place several filters in front of your camera at any given time.

Lets take a look at the most important ones to use.

Neutral Density Filters (ND): Neutral Density filters will certainly help you with tough exposures. These filters work by cutting down the light that reaches your lens. These filters come in a variety of strengths with the most popular being 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 – these filters will help with exposure without affecting colour.

One half of these filters is dark and the other is completely clear. They basically work by reducing brightness. The different numbers stand for the amount of brightness they reduce – 0.3 ND reduces light by one stop – 0.6 reduces light by 2 stops – 0.9 reduces light by three stops.

Lets say you arrive at a high contrast scene, – you take a light reading of the sky and get an exposure reading of F/22 at 1/8 second; you take a reading from the ground in front of you and get a reading of F/22 at 1 second. This is a difference of three stops of light. You need to reduce the brightness of the sky. By using the 0.9 ND you will reduce the light in the sky by three stops without affecting the light hitting the ground in front of you.

Polarizing Filters: A polarizing filter should be top of the list – a polarizing filter can be used with colour or black and white and is probably the most important filter on the market today. The polarizing filter will also darken the blue sky to give it a strong rich colour. It will make mist stand out and can be also used to give fast flowing water a misty effect. This filter is most effective with side lighting.

Warm-up filters: In overcast conditions, dont put your camera away. This is an ideal time for you to switch your attention to landscape detail. On an overcast day images often appear cold and dull. Try using a warm-up filter. These filters will remove the dull effect that you get shooting without the sun.

The 81-series are the best choice and will give your images an extra bit of life. An 81A warm-up filter is ideal to use in adding extra warmth to low light images.

Filters for B/W photography: Just because you use black and white film it doesnt mean that you cant use filters – there are several filters for B/W photography. The polarizing filter is one of the few filters that work for B/W and colour photography. It will help to darken shades of grey in your final print.

The red filter is one of the most popular. This filter will darken the sky giving your image more impact. The most common red filter is the number 25. Filters for B/W work by transmitting light of its own colour, and holds back light of the other colours.

Theres a large amount of filters available; these are the most important filters for landscape photography.
There are also several filters on the market today that will do very little for your photography. Colour graduated filters should be left at home or placed in the bin – colour graduated filters work by creating un-natural colours, destroying your final print.

Even if your life is perfect and everything is running like clock work, one day you still may get into trouble or there will be a problem that you will not be able to solve yourself. What you do is call a friend, a person whom you can always rely on. He will never betray you and your secrets, never lie, never deceive. Once you have no way out and problems seem to surround you like enemies, your mind goes blank and the only desire you have is to hide your head in the sand and pretend that you dont hear or see what is going on. And than he comes, the rescuer, a fresh mind and a strong hand to pull you out to the surface and help you to face your problems. But does your friend correspond to that description?

You are surrounded by a lot of people daily, who claim to be your friends. You spend much time with them thinking of them as friends. But when it comes to help or advice they all seem to disappear, to evaporate suddenly after leaving you with a thousand made up excuses. You feel deceived and have no idea of what to do. Then a thought dawns on you that in your phone book there is still a number of an old friend of yours that you havent seen for years now. You know that if you call him and ask for help, hell wake up in the middle of the night, lean you all his money, give shelter even he has a family of six to keep. He helped you out in high school studies, provided term paper help, covered your back when you had some of your crazy affairs and never complained when he had been getting in trouble for his help. Being good in writing custom term papers he always seemed to fail his work to try his best to do your work. But there is also strange thing you remember; you didnt really appreciate all his efforts to help you. They were so numerous that you started to take them for granted and didnt even pay attention to what had been done for you. It was so weird to see that somebody was ready to help you out of willingness to make your life better, that it was hard to believe that it was so.

Than it was an inseparable part of your friendship. If you are a friend you have to give, do, make and so on. Friendship turned into an exploitation of a person who cares about you. Meanwhile you continue to have fun and relax with others and leave all the difficult things on your friends hands. Than suddenly youve stopped communicating. After all these years of true friendship your friend disappeared and there was no sign of him for a long time. Oh well, that wasnt a big loss, you think, and continue to live not even trying to find out what has happened. And now you are making a poor show every time you try to improve the situation. There is nobody beside you and you burst into curses, thinking about liars that surround you now. You dial a number of an old friend with shaking hand and pray for him to be there for you. You hear a familiar voice and start explaining, and ask to forgive at the same time. The situation goes back to normal. You feel that everything is going to be alright; your friend is coming to save the day. A minute later you sit in the kitchen drinking coffee and look in your friends wise worried eyes. At one moment you turn into a normal person from the idiot. Now you have your friend in your life again.

I think that we all know now how important backlinks are for the search engine ranking success of our web site. I also think that we all know now that one way to get these backlinks is by doing link exchanges with other sites. (For the uninitiated, backlinks are links on other web sites that point to ours.)

But do we know that there are various things we need to check before agreeing to exchanging links with another web site? After all, the whole point of exchanging links with others is to benefit from the ranking of their web sites. It is therefore imperative that we investigate ahead of time as to whether exchanging links with another site is to our advantage or not.

I have thought about this whole idea of link exchange preparation and came up with a 3-step process that involves an analysis of 3 pages of the web site we want to exchange links with. The 3 pages are:

- the home page where we will need to check 7 things about that page,

- the directory page: this is the page that contains a list of categories that the site has put together in a bid to organize its link exchanges. We need to check 7 things here,

- the backlink page: this is the page that will contain our backlink. We also need to check 7 things here.

Note that in some cases, the ‘target’ web site will not have a directory page. In that case, our analysis will be a 2-step one rather than a 3-step one.

In this first article, of may be 2 or 3, we shall look at the 7 things (organized in 2 groups) we should check about the home page of the target web site.

1. We need to check what Google thinks of the site. This is done by looking at some things that Google is happy to report about a site. The idea here is to see if there are any problems with the site, from Google’s point of view, that would cause us to decide not to exchange links with them.

I suggest that we look at:

a) how many pages does the site have indexed? This can be done by using ‘site:www.site.com’ in the Google search box,

b) how many backlinks does Google report for the site? This can be done by using ‘links:www.site.com’ in the Google search box,

c) is the site listed in Google’s index? This can be done by using ‘http://www.site.com’ in the Google search box,

d) what is the Page Rank of the site/home page? There are several ways of doing this. One way is to get the Google toolbar and visit the web site to see its PR. Another way is to use one of the many web sites on the Internet that enables us to find the PR of any web site. And still another way is to look for software that will tell you the PR of any web sites.

Although we will generally need to look at these 4 things together in a sort of table in order to decide whether the target site passes the first step or not, there are definite results that would cause me to decide straight away not to exchange links with a site:

- if the PR of the site is zero,

- if the site is not listed in the Google index,

- if the site does not have any pages indexed by Google.

You will note here that I am using Google as the first step in the preparation. In fact, we can use any search engine if we want to but given that Google is more fussy than others when it comes to backlinks, I would suggest using Google in the above first step.

2. I would then suggest that we look at 3 tags of the home page of the target site, in a bid to determine if the site has a theme compatible with ours:

a) its title tag,

b) its description tag,

c) its keywords tag.

There are several ways of checking the contents of a web page’s tags. If your browser, such as MSIE, allows you to view the contents of a web page, then you will need to visit the home page and click on the right menu command to view the contents of the page. Then you will need to scroll to the top of the page to view the contents of its tags. The alternative is to look for web sites on the Internet that enable you to view the contents of the tags of any web pages. There are many such web sites on the net.

The reason for this step is that Google takes into account the theme of web sites when looking at backlinks. This means that backlinks from a site that has a theme compatible with ours will be of higher value than one that comes from a site that has nothing to do with what our site is about.

As mentioned above, this preparation is on the home page of the target web site and is only the first step. There are 2 more steps: one on the directory page and one on the backlink page.

It is only when the target web site passes the 3 steps that we should feel confident about exchanging links with them in that the link exchange will be to our advantage. Needless to say that the target web site will also need to conduct a similar 3-step analysis of our site prior to wanting to exchange links with us.

People tend to look in the future with perspective. That is, probably, a remarkable characteristics of human beings. Five New Area Superintendents Appointed to the San Diego Schools

In June 2006, Superintendent Carl Cohn appointed five new area superintendents for the San Diego Schools.

Each new area superintendent will be an advocate for the schools under them, as well as the communities for these schools. They will be empowered to ensure that the San Diego Schools have a fully enriched and competitive curriculum that recognizes the importance of the educational basics, as well as the nearly forgotten art, music and physical education programs. They will be responsible for expanding in their San Diego Schools partnerships between parents, the community, businesses and higher education. Each student is to be ensured as smooth a transition as possible for students and parents, especially in the early years.

These five appointments complete key staffing of top leadership positions in the San Diego Schools. Each of the five areas within the San Diego Schools will include up to 25 elementary schools and their nearby middle schools.

The new area one superintendent is Carol Barry. She earned an MA inn school administration from Azusa Pacific University and a BA in liberal studies from San Diego State University. Before her appointment, Barry served as acting assistant superintendent for the San Diego Schools. Previously, she was the principal at several San Diego Schools.

The area two superintendent is Dr. Hye Jung (Chelsea) Kang-Smith. Kang-Smith holds an Ed.D. from the University of Southern California, MS in education from California Southern University Fullerton, and her BS in biology from the University of California Irvine. Kang-Smith came to the San Diego Schools in 2005, where she first served as principal in Anaheim Union High School District and most recently as assistant superintendent.

Dr. Richard Cansdale is the area three superintendent. He holds an Ed.D. in educational leadership from the United States International University, an Ed.S. from Point Loma Nazarene University, an MA in education of exceptional children from San Francisco University, and a BA in elementary education from the University of Nevada at Reno. Previously, Cansdale was the principal at Cherokee Point Elementary School in the San Diego Schools.

The area four superintendent is Vincent Matthews, who was a 2006 fellow of the Broad Superintendent’s Academy. He earned an MA in educational administration and a BA in elementary education from San Francisco State University. Before his appointment, Matthews was an educator in residence for the NewSchools Venture Fund in San Francisco. Prior to that, he was an advisor to 35 charter schools that serves approximately 9,000 low-income students.

Dr. Delfino Aleman, Jr. is the area five superintendent. He holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas at Austin, an MA in education from Texas Women’s University, and a BA in theology from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. Aleman, who is proficient in Spanish, was the associate superintendent for teaching and learning at the Isaac School District in Phoenix, Arizona. Previously, he served as director of policies, procedures and public information in the San Antonio Independent School District.

In addition to these five new appointments, the San Diego Schools filled three other positions through recent appointments.

Dorothy Harper is the new associate superintendent for parent, community and student engagement. Harper earned her MA in education from Memphis State University and bachelors degree in biology from Dillard University. Her experience includes vice president of development for the Newton Learning Supplemental Education Services, as well as area superintendent, assistant superintendent, and deputy superintendent at the Long Beach Unified School District. In her new position, Harper will work to establish a comprehensive, consolidated system of support that will engage parents, the community, and students within the San Diego Schools.

Arun Ramanathan, an advanced doctoral fellow at Harvard, is the new executive director for governmental relations. He earned an MA in special education and elementary education from Boston College, and a BA in government from Dartmouth. Prior to his appointment, Ramanathan was research director for the Los Angeles Unified School District. He will serve as an advocate for the San Diego Schools to state legislators on issues and laws affecting the school district.

Dr. Kyo Yamashiro is the San Diego Schools’ new director of school management. She holds a Ph.D. from UCLA, which she received in June of 2006 as a top doctoral candidate. She earned an MA in administration and policy analysis and a BA in English literature from Stanford University. Prior to her appointment, she was a research and evaluation consultant for the Long Beach Unified School District. In her new position, Yamashiro works with the School Choice programs, including charter schools, No Child Left Behind program improvement, and enrollment options program magnet schools and voluntary ethnic enrollment programs (VEEP) are included.

These appointments excite the San Diego Schools. All will serve well the more than 132,000 students in the San Diego Schools, the second largest school district in California. With more than 216 educational facilities, these talented and motivated appointees will be a plus for the San Diego Schools.
